“What are we going to do about the Custodians?”

It’s not a question I’ve wanted to ask—I’ve avoided asking it for the two weeks we’ve been here, in fact. But I can’t pretend that we aren’t still here for a reason, and as much as I love being here with Frederick in our happy relationship bubble, I know it can’t last forever.

David and Lucas have their own lives to get back to. They can’t stay here indefinitely. Frederick has sworn to protect me, but I worry about his other Sentinel duties. And I still have classes starting in August that are already paid for, assuming it’s safe enough for me to go.

Not that I’ll be able to keep paying, now that my job at Unique Beans is gone. It’s not like I could keep the job once I had to go in hiding from the Custodians. At least my apartment is okay. I panicked when I realized I couldn’t keep making rent without a job, but Frederick said he’s taking care of it.

It kind of stung at first, having to rely on Frederick’s money for everything. But when I brought it up, he kissed me and said, “I’ve never had anyone to spend money on before. It makes me happy to take care of these things for you.”

It’s hard to argue with that.

“What do you mean, Cait?” Frederick puts his mug down on the counter with a little clank, and spins on his stool to look at me. “You’re staying here until the threat is gone.”

Leaning an elbow on the sleek granite, I meet Frederick’s steady gaze. “But we can’t stay here forever.”

Hurt flashes in his eyes. “Do you want to leave?”

“It’s not that.” I slip off the stool and wrap my arms around him. “I love being here with you. But David and Lucas have their own lives. And what about the Sentinels?”

Frederick gazes down at me, his eyes dark and intense. “I told you before, Cait. You are my priority. There are others in the Sentinels who can step up, take over for me. And if Lucas or David need to leave, I have other trusted allies who can help.”

“But…” I don’t want to ask it, but I force the words out, anyway. “Won’t the Custodians keep looking for me? How can we stop them?”

He sighs, his forehead creasing. “I didn’t want to tell you until I had it in hand, but since you asked… I know a vampire who can imbue items with certain powers. I’ve asked her to make you something that will prevent anyone from tracking you.”

“Is that possible?”

“Yes. Her name is Chiara, and she’s done it before. She can create an item for you to wear, and once you have it on, you’ll be untraceable. Unfortunately, it’s taking longer than I’d like to get it. Chiara went through a traumatic experience recently, and has become somewhat of a recluse ever since. One of my allies has gone to Maine to find Chiara and ask her to do this for me.
